IMMUNOLOGICA offers helminthic therapy to treat Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Crohn’s Disease is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immunological system of the patient attacks its own intestine, producing inflammation. It is an emergent disease, associated with socioeconomic development.
Although genes influence the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it seems that the drastic changes in our environment have allowed its surge. One of these changes is the erradication of helminths.
The mechanisms used by helminths are basically two:
- Helminths can prevent interleukin-12, gamma interpheron and tumoral necrosis factor α can promote the release and interleukin-10 can promote the transformation of growth factor β and the production of T reg cells.
- The resulting inflammation is characterised by a hiper-reaction of Th1 Lymphocytes. Helminths produce a Th2 response, which balances Th1 responses.
Basically, this claim is based on three different kinds of studies carried out:
- Epidemiological studies
- Studies on laboratory animals
- Clinical studies on human beings
This studies have shown that: Helminths can prevent and revert intestinal inflammation in animal studies. In clinical studies, in patients with inflammatory intestinal disease, exposure to helminths reduces the activity of the disease.
The expectations as regards the remission of the disease with this therapy are taken from studies with patients carried out in different research centres and universities:
Crohn’s Disease:
- Study University of Nottingam and University of Queensland (see results graph): Using Necator Americanus
- Study, University of IOWA: Remission 79% of patients. Using TSO.
